The works by Go Nagai are certainly a great appeal to the masculine audience, and things such as Devilman and Violence Jack certainly give off a feel of violence and sexuality centered around masculine tastes that would definitely appeal to the gay man. Plus, the 80's incarnation of Devilman's friggin' hot.

How does everyone feel about the Hougoan becomeing the most powerful magic user in the world. I think its a great move but I am biased as I am quiet partial to the religion. I think hes an under used and underrated character and he can do a lot for marvel if they use him competently.how does everyone else feel?

Hi! My partner and I would like to meet fellow comic, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fans in the Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, and Santa Clarita areas.

We are down to earth, easy going, no hassles, and no hang-ups. We are non-smokers, non-drinkers, and non-drug users and would prefer meeting the same (social drinking is just fine).

Catch you later,
CJ

Anyone know any possible fan-created media of Cable, the manly man from the manly future, or Deadpool, the wisecracking killer. I mean both of them. Together. In a romantic action of possibly sexual nature. Yes. Major win.

Wow, hey ya all, jus' thought i'd sho my face here. i'm a gay comix artist. Basically, i do creative nonviolent comix along the lines of a gay-themed "Heavy Metal" style. Take a look at my profile for some examples (go past at least the first two pages, tho, as i'm of late promoting my "radical faerie"-themed calendar).

My style is definitely NOT your average mainline style. And because of this, i've had to self-publish my stuff most of the time.

If anyone's interested in reading some of my full-length stories, which can get quite raucous, give me a write! i am willing to print up small amounts of copies of my comix for individual orders.

peace!

Three Batman books bite the dust

Comics
Robin, Nightwing, Birds of Prey to End in February
By Matt Brady

While fans are still up in the air about whether or not Batman will actually die at the end of Grant Morrison’s “Batman: R.I.P.” arc, DC has confirmed three casualties for Newsarama.

According to the publisher, the February-shipping issues of Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey will be the final issues of the respective series.

As well as being the final issues, Robin #183, Nightwing #153 and Birds of Prey #127 will end eras for Batman-related titles, as each stretches back at least nine years.

Birds of Prey (which debuted in 1999) is currently written by Tony Bedard and follows the adventures of Barbra Gordon, the former Batgirl (now “Oracle”), Black canary and a rotating cast of DC’s female heroes; Nightwing (which debuted in 1996) is written by Peter Tomasi, and Robin (which debuted in 1994) is currently written by Fabian Nicieza.

The three series – coincidentally all originally written by Chuck Dixon, fleshed out the world of Batman in the comics, showcasing the original Robin, Dick Grayson, as Nightwing, Tim Drake as Robin and Barbra Gordon in Birds of Prey.

The three titles were roughly in the middle of DC’s lineup, sales-wise, with Nightwing seeing sales of over 50,000 copies to comic shops for September, while Robin and Birds of Prey saw sales of 32,000 and 21,000 copies, respectively.

DC declined to say if the series’ cancellations were due to sales, or if the three titles would be replaced by three new titles in 2009.

New Moderator

Apparently I have been made the new moderator and was not told about it. This is okay as I also moderate the Gay-mers and Gay Geeks Tribe as well. As such will do my best to be a fair and decent person. That being the case, there is one issue I must address.

While I do appreciate and even promote free speech, I do NOT condone or tolerate racism or derogatory terms when it comes to ones personal lifestyle. This is a first and final warning to Sweeny Todd aka ST.inc. I normally discipline things like this privately, but I have received MULTIPLE complaints on you in ONE night. This is NOT the way to find out I have been given moderator privileges. ST inc will be making a public apology for his racist comments and derogatory statements towards other comic lovers and hopefully the issue will be dropped.

On another note, YAY! I totally love this tribe and cant believe I got leadership! Anyone know why the old leader left?

Back in the X-Fold (& Who's That Green Guy?)

Well... I've officially ended my one-man boycott of all things X (with the notable exception of Astonishing X-Men).

The cover of Uncanny #497 pulled me in. I love the whole hippie look... and remembered reading somewhere that the X-Men were going to SF... my home town ... and I was really curious about the green guy featured on the cover with Emma... so I broke down and snagged it.

Kinda glad I did. I even picked up the previous two issues. The art is lovely and the storyline seems, thus far, to not be the same ole thing.

The cover of Young X-Men #2 prompted the same reaction. Dani has her powers again? Yay! (I haven't read it yet).

About that green guy with Emma... turns out it's Cyclops. Did anyone else get a green Cyke on the cover of their Uncanny? When I went back to the shop, I saw that all the remaining copies featured Scott as expected.

I take back everything I said about Downey Jr. He was perfect. I hope they make more, and there's a hint at the end after the credits that an Avengers movie is in the works.

So I've been in Maui the last month working ( i know, life's a bitch innit?)
But there are no comic shops on the island...so my stack of comics waiting me at the shop in Portland still has to wait until March 9th. I'm tired of reading promo teasers on the web, and WW's comic blog only wets my appetite. So.....
What have you been reading this month? Don't worry about spoilers, I'd love to know what comics/stories/characters you have loved this month...............

So, if DC could only have one Hawk character (something that may be a decision in FINAL CRISIS), would you want it to be the Katar Hol Hawkman, the Cater Hall Hawkman, or The Kendra Saunders Hawkgirl, and why?

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

It is a tremendous pleasure to announce the publication of edition 2.9 of the ICP at the following link:

http://rosemaryrowe.typepad.com/creampuff_revolution/2008/03/creampuff-welco.html

Creampuff, a.k.a., Roro, who hails from Vancouver, is our first repeat host from Canada. I encourage you to bookmark this edition and visit it over time so that you can enjoy each of the contributions from the world of HIV/AIDS. I hope that you will also join me in thanking Roro for her work this month. We “met” about 2 years ago during the NHL Hockey Championship between Edmonton and the Carolina Hurricanes and have been fast friends since despite some rather competitive invocation of mojo to make our teams win the Stanley Cup. Roro’s sense of compassion combined with her sense of humor makes me quite happy to count her among my friends.

This 21st consecutive edition of the ICP features personal accounts, video, a special musical contribution from UK band Slovo, self-help information and the latest in news from the HIV/AIDS community. I hope that you will spend some time reading and that you will leave comments for the contributors. It is through your comments that we can hone our messages and learn how you feel about our work. Please feel free to leave your thoughts with each of the contributors and for our gracious host.

Next Edition

Please visit the ICP homepage to learn more about this project and how you can contribute here:

http://www.internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com .

We are now accepting submissions for edition 2.10 to be hosted here, at Mshairi:

http://www.mshairi.com/blog

This will be Mshairi’s first stint as host of the ICP although she has been a frequent contributor in the past. Mshairi’s edition will mark the first time that the ICP will have been hosted by an African host. If you like poetry, you should scroll through her blog. A selection of her poetry also appears at one of my favorite sites, The Other Voices Poetry International Project, an anthology of poetry from around the world that has been recognized by UNESCO, here:

http://www.othervoicespoetry.org

Mshairi's work appears under the title “Footprints” here:

Contribute Your Work

Please join the growing community of contributors and hosts for this important international forum for genuine voices of AIDS. If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me at ron.hudson@verizon.net with the subject listed as “Volunteering to Host the ICP” and I will make the process for you as fun and rewarding as possible. We urgently need new volunteer hosts for the ICP editions after April, 2008. I will work with you to make the process as painless as it can be whether you are a first-time or returning host.

Please Share with Your Friends

Please share this notice with your friends and consider posting announcements of our link on your blogs and websites. Our continuing presence is bolstered by your participation and outreach. Please help spread the word.

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please email me at ron.hudson@verizon.net to be added to or removed from the ICP mailing list. Please include the word subscribe or unsubscribe in your subject line to indicate your intent. I will use your source email address as indicated in your note.
New Frontier Animated -review

Got an advanced copy of the JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER animated film. It's sorta hard to review this because I was a fan of the Darwyn Cooke series and that stays in my head. First, the voices- Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman would seem like a natural fit, but it doesn't work for me, and neither does whoever is voicing Green Lantern. Batman sounds very dark and grovelly and thus very appropriate, but I can't get Kevin Conroy out of my head, so this new voice is jarring. All other characters seem well cast. Animation-wise, there's more familiarity with the original BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, than the later stuff. The Darwyn Cooke opening is beautiul, as is the ending which bookends the film. In terms of story, it is extremely accurate to Darwyn's original series, but there's a lot that's been removed so there's a feeling that things are jumping around too much and too fast without explanation. For instance: we're introduced to the Martian Manhunter, we see his T.V. imitation scene, and then shortly thereafter he's John Jones, Private investigator. However some key scenes are reproduced with incredible accuracy. Once all elements get into place it becomes a fun ride. What's really great are the special features like a history on the JLA up to the present. We see so many comics creators, including Stan Lee, weighing in on the JLA. Roy Thomas, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, and Denny O'Neil are all part of it. There's also a sneak peak of the Batman Anime' style project, and it surprisingly looks GOOD!!!!!

Has anyone been following Brave & Bold?

Aside from the fact that I love team-up books, my initial draw was the art of George Perez... but Mark Waid has been building something intriguing since issue #1. Who or what is Megistus?

And this book definitely speaks to the 'old school" comic geek with it's well crafted Silver Age feel.

I haven't seen or heard any hype... and I'm beginning to fear it might get cancelled ... which would be a shame, considering that Astonishing X-Men, Justice League and Justice Society are the only other mainstream super-heroe books I really enjoy anymore.

RIP JOKER - Heath Ledger

NEW YORK (AP) — Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'"

His latest role was in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

My friend brought over his new Xbox Elite and we hooked it up via HDMI to my new LCD big screen TV. Freakin' incredible graphics. And the story ranges through New York, Atlantis, the Kree homeworld, and Asgard.

After a bit of jostling around, our dream team was Storm, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, and Thor. We kicked serious ass!

.... huge AWESOME stills of the stunning SET !!!!!!!

By Dave Gibbons - artist of WATCHMEN

On the movie backlot, like a sailor on shore leave, I gawp in wonder at a New York City that never really was. Once a Canadian lumber yard, it's become a complex of American city streets.

At the corner, a Treasure Island store promises a bounty of pulp thrills; down the block, the Gunga Diner beckons, fully fitted out in chrome and purple leather and, over there, the Rumrunner sign looms luridly. Even the austere facade of the Institute For Extraspatial Studies can't spoil the gaudy fun.

On an upper floor, I spot the windows of the Judomaster Martial Arts Studio. I’m stopped in my tracks. Judomaster? Detail piles on dizzying detail.

Rain's falling hard now and I'm led inside, through a grubby little hovel crammed with dressmaking dummies, past the huge halls of Karnak, into Dan Dreiberg's homely brownstone and down to where the Owl Ship sits. I clamber aboard in giddy delight.

The rest of the visit kaleidoscopes crazily by: I watch footage of Rorschach pulling Nite Owl off a bloodied Knot Top; I flip through an issue of the Black Freighter; on a laptop, I see raw CGI blocking for the Vietnam sequence; I hold a smiley face pin splattered with what looks like real human bean juice; sitting in my own personal director's chair, I sign dozens of books and posters for cast and crew...

Finally, tired but happy, arms around my new buddies, costumed and otherwise, it's my turn to smile for the camera.

A month later, I'm smiling still.

My local comic shop had a crazy mad sale this weekend, and I got a bunch o' comics I'd passed on for 10 cents a piece. Issues connected to 52, Countdown, World War III, Civil War, The Initiative, World War Hulk, Emperor Vulcan and other crossover scams (I even got Messiah Complex at a discount).

There were no complete runs, of course, so now I have all these questions... starting with this one:

When/how did Buddy Baker (and family) come back into continuity? I thought they were killed off.

Top 23 Comic Book Storylines from ‘The Age of Freedom’: Part 1
http://www.chycho.com/?q=node/1378

To help better understand the choices made in The List, below is a brief introduction to the world of Comic Books.

The Beginning:

One of the most important contributions the United States of America has made to modern civilization is the creation and the popularization of the comic book genre. It is widely accepted that the present form of the comic book, in which word balloons are used, began in New York in 1896 with ‘The Yellow Kid’. This simple comic about a “snaggle-toothed child with a goofy grin” was the genesis of what has become a multi billion-dollar sector of commerce known as the Comic Book Industry.

In the early years free artistic expression was encouraged, resulting in growth and prospering. Initially it was humor, horror, mystery, adventure, and science fiction stories that dominated the medium, nurturing the imagination of millions of people around the world. Entrepreneurial artists with creative minds who wanted to share their perspective on reality formed small companies producing some of the greatest visual and literary works of the 20th century. Unfortunately however, the conservative minds that dominated the political spectrum of the United States at the time regarded most of the content morally unacceptable. As a result the Comics Code Authority (CCA) was created in 1954 to censor undesirable elements from the American conscience.

Creatures such as vampires, werewolves and zombies and words such as ‘crime’, ‘horror’ and ‘terror’ were forbidden to appear in print. The result of the suppression of this freedom of expression was the termination of some of the greatest stories ever told.

One of the worst tragedies occurred when EC comics, which was one of the most imaginative companies to have emerged from the American empire, was forced to only concentrate on its humor magazine, ‘Mad’, and cancelled all of its crime, horror, satire, military and science fiction comics. This lost opportunity for creating an extensive library of materials based on these forbidden genres is unimaginable. As Diane Di Prima once stated, “The only war that matters is the war against the imagination”, and the restrictions in intellectual and social development imposed by the CCA was a devastating blow for humanity.

With the censorship of comics that delved into the deeper and darker side of human nature, Superhero comics flourished. Certain underground comics that refused to abide by the CCA obtained a cult following, however, in general, it was the companies that abided with the government regulators, hence giving them a wider distribution, that gained in popularity.

The Rebellion:

For the next few decades after 1954 there were minor skirmishes between artists and the CCA. Over time these confrontations resulted in the softening of some restrictions, such as the ban on referring to homosexuality in 1989. This allowed the first mainstream character to be to be outed in 1992 with ‘Northstar’ from the ‘Alpha Flight’ series. This event was heralded as a major breakthrough and embraced by comic book enthusiasts, but it was condemned by certain religious and conservative organizations.

The independent comic book companies however were ahead of their time and were more innovative then the large corporations that self-censored their artists to maintain their good standing with the government regulators. Before Northstar was outed, Kitchen Sink Enterprises had already introduced gay characters in 1980 with the first issue of ‘Gay Comix’. After Northstar’s minor claim to fame and the cancellation of the series in 1994, it was the independent comic book companies that challenged the status quo. The same year that ‘Alpha Flight’ was cancelled, ‘Go-Go Boy’ was released through select comic book retailers as the first openly gay, lesbian and transgender monthly superhero comic book dealing with such important issues as AIDS, gay-bashing, personal identity and family, as well as evil corporations that wanted to rule the world.

Even though during the 1980’s and 90’s the mainstream companies maintained their dominance of the industry, Alternative Comics gained in popularity. This forced the large corporations to take an aggressive stance staving off the coming onslaught from the independent creators while trying to retain their market share. Marvel Comics tried to reduce exposure of comic fans to the independent publishers by flooding the market, hence retail shelf space, with poorly developed stories and shallow characters. In 1994, they even went as far as acquiring Heroes World distributors to exclusively distribute their comics. This started what is referred to as the “exclusivity wars”, the end result of which was that most distributors went out of business by 1997, and 90% of the Direct Market share went to Diamond Comic Distributors. This futile attempt to stifle creative evolution also almost bankrupted Marvel Comics.

The Triumph:

During this time of strife, many of the top artists in the industry broke away from the major companies and formed co-ops in which they published their books under umbrella-corporations. The main benefit obtained from these alliances was that artists were able to retain the rights and the creative development for their characters. Once creative confines were removed, the caliber of comics drastically improved, shifting the mindset of readers into demanding more intellectually changeling material. As a result there was an explosion of creativity reminiscent of the early years before the CCA’s censorship. This era is referred to as the beginning of the Modern Age of Comics, and was the setting for the real life Corporate Comic Wars.

During this period, amidst this unsuitability, some of the most successful comic books in history were developed. The emergence of these Alternative Comics was a rebirth for the industry the impact of which can still be felt today. It is as a direct result of the commoditization of the Worlds created through these comics that the film and television, textile and toy, and the gaming industries have prospered to the extent that they have. Licensing agreements with publishers and creators have produced what is now one of the major business growth sectors within the United States.

The Implications:

During the 2006 Comic-Con, Deepak Chopra made the following statement about comic books:

"Comics engage both your left brain, because they are linguistically structured and there's language, and at the same time they engage your right brain because of the images. In fact, ... I’m sure ... brain waves would show coherence between the right and left brains, which is the prelude to creativity.

“Art has a function because it not only reflects what’s happening in the collective psyche and collective consciousness, but it also in many ways mirrors of the evolution of our collective consciousness. If you track the evolution of these comics… from the 1930s right up to this moment, you’ll see that they actually mirror human evolution and particularly, the evolution of human consciousness.”

By finally reducing the constraints set by the CCA from the development process of comic books, we have been ushered into a new era of imagination brought about by unrestrained creativity. The effects of this newfound freedom are still in its infancy, which means that we must continue to nurture its growth, providing a medium for artists to create without government censorship.

At a time when conservatives minds are trying to tightened their stranglehold on the American conscience, it has become crucial for us to remember what has been accomplished up to this point, and the long hard battle that has been waged to gain these freedom. For our society to flourish, government and corporate censorship must be removed in all its forms.

The List:

The period known as the Model Age of Comics is probably the most important era since the dawn of the Comic Book Industry. The shakeup that occurred in the 1980’s and 90’s resulted in a surge of creativity that tested the boundaries set by our society. I have dubbed this period ‘The Age of Freedom’ since it gave birth to Alternative Comics and marks the beginning of the dismantling of the CCA and the censorship of human thought from comic books. Below are 8 out of the top 23 of the most important comic book storylines from this period. Some were a brilliant desperate attempts by the major companies to retain market share, others a mastery of imagination and freedom of expression. In no particular order the list is as follows:

1. Cerebus: This series was started in 1977 by Dave Sim and ended in 2004. It is one continuous tale, spanning 300 issues and 6,000 pages, making it the longest running storyline in comic book history. With Cerebus, Sim demonstrated that an independent creator could obtain a core fan base and grow to be a formidable force in the industry. This inspired a whole generation of artists to create and distribute their own comics. As for what this comic is about, you could say it’s about everything: from morality to brutality, from sorcery to spiritually, from drunken debauchery to strategic warfare: Cerebus is an epic that has it all.

2. Love and Rockets: The first issue of this collection was released in 1981 making it one of the first self-published comics from the “alternative comics revolution of the 1980s”. L&R is not about a specific story line, but an assortment of intricate characters, primarily chicano, that interact and grow over time from the late 70’s to the present.

3. Frank Miller’s Batman: Miller has produced two of the most important comics in history. First is ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, a fictional tale set 20 years in the future where Batman is forced out of retirement to deal with a crime ridden Gotham. This series reintroduced a darker Batman to a whole new generation of comic fans and helped usher in a new era of tougher and grittier superheroes. The second book is ‘Year One’. This time Miller recounted the origin of Batman in the same humanistic form as before. This storyline turned out to be just as popular as the DKR and galvanized Batman’s fan base created a year earlier. Miller was able to use the recognition he obtained from this work, and his work with ‘Daredevil’, to kick off his independent carrier which introduced the now classic ‘Sin City’ published through Dark Horse Comics.

4. Lobo: The Last Czarnian: Lobo is one of the most controversial characters in comic book history and this is the series that kicked it off. Before this four part mini-series, Lobo was a secondary character introduced in ‘Omega Men’ and maintained in the DC universe. The Last Czarnian was a quirky tale of a bounty hunter bound by honor to carry out a mission which involved his fourth-grade teacher, a murderous gang of groupies, a vengeful truck driving Elvis look alike, ruthless paramilitary grannies, a pan-galactic demolition dance company, a planetary S.W.A.T. team, a Spelling Bee to the death, and a few secondary themes to boot. In 1990 it was surprising to see a major company like DC comics release a book which was based on pure violence and sadistically masochistic humor, which explains why it was completely sold out in the first few days. As if this wasn’t enough, DC comics followed the success of this series with Lobo being hired by a drunken Eastern Bunny to kill a “cross-dressing” sweatshop running evil Santa Clause, in the ‘Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special’.

DC’s final act of defiance through Lobo occurred with the release of ‘Infanticide’, a carnage ridden tale in which the bastard children of Lobo try to kill their father. As a reviewer noted, “if you enjoy dark, twisted humour and love those B-rated Brian Yuzna gore fests, this book should be right up your alley.”

5. Death of superman: The initial reaction from the comic book community to the ‘Doomsday’ storyline was lukewarm at best, however by the time the final battle took place the North American populace was in a frenzy. The mainstream media disseminated the news about the demise of Superman and people desperate to get their copy began to rush into comic book stores, to find out that there were no copies to be found. At the time this storyline was released, Superman fans were in decline and most comic book stores had not predicated the demand from the general populace. Regular customers who had pre-ordered their copy were selling their books to people on the streets for outrageous amounts. Rumors were circulating that the bagged issue of Superman #75 was selling for as high $200 on the day of its release. The importance of this series was not that Superman was dead, because everyone in the Industry knew that he would be revamped, it was the fact that the story generated so much interest. It proved to fans, artists, and companies that there was a huge market yet untapped. Considering that right now hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent to create movies based on comic books, we can assume that the Industry was able to capitalize on this market.

6. Batman: Bane and Venom: One of the most important sagas in the DC universe began with Batman becoming a drug addict in Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20. This story introduced the drug Venom, a “strength-enhancing super-steroid” which was later used by Bane to break Batman's back in the ‘Knightfall’ epic. The result of this saga sent the Batman books into a tale spin with guest appearences by almost every major Batman villain and the introduction of Jean-Paul Valley as the new Batman, who later gained his own series with ‘Azrael’. This was DC’s way of shaking up the Batman universe in the same manner as ‘Death of Superman’, and resulted in two other mega-sagas in ‘Knightquest’ and ‘KnightsEnd’. The success of this storyline was compatible to the death of Robin in ‘Death in the Family’, a series where, for the first time in history, fans decided the outcome to a story by casting their votes for a possible ending.

7. Watchman: This series by Alan Moore, the creator of ‘V for Vendetta’, ‘From Hell’, and numerous other books, is considered by many to be the greatest comic book ever created. Moore accomplished more for the Industry, from 1986 to 87 in twelve issues, then had ever been done by any artist in the past. He and Dave Gibbons created a science fiction story that was regarded as a literary masterpiece and awarded the prestigious Hugo Award in 1988. The only graphic novel to ever receive this praise. The story “is set in 1985, in an alternative history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.” In this not-so-fictional reality we are introduced to super heroes without super powers and serious personal issues. It is a masterpiece and if I was to have provided a ranking to this list based on a must read criteria then ‘The Watchman’ would be sitting near the top.

8. Spawn: Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, gained fame within the Industry through his work with Spiderman. McFarlane worked on numerous projects for both Marvel and DC comics before venturing off to form Image Comics in 1992 with six other “high-profile illustrators”. Spawn, a netherworld character, was at best a cross between ‘Batman’ and ‘Spiderman’ and at worst a blatant rip-off. It is not because of the story that Spawn has become one of the most important comics from this period; it is because of what McFarlane was able to accomplish with the book. In the early 1990’s, I recall seeing an interview in which McFarlane was asked what he wanted to do with his art, and his reply was (paraphrasing) ‘I want to develop a unique style, and make millions of dollars’, and this is exactly what he did. By creating a character which pushed the boundaries of what was morally acceptable by the regulators he proved that by creating something beyond the constraints set by government censors, he could fill a gap within the industry. McFarlane set an example for other artists who wanted to break away from their shackles by showing them that monetary success was attainable outside of the corporate structure.

to be continued ...

Didn't much like this series when it originally aired. Thought it looked good, but the idea of an 80 year old decrepid Bruce Wayne didn't appeal to me. Wasn't a fan of the BB batsuit either. But, I bought the three seasons on DVD and have been realizing that this series is much better than I gave it credit for the first time around, and I've come to appreciate the new Batsuit in motion, especially when the red wings are extended. Have been thinking about doing a live action short film on BB. Anyone in NY want to play the part? Any other people on here like the series?

I just went through a Spiderman marathon at home and discovered my most emotional scenes were with Aunt Mae. Believe me, I love comic book movies but the real love I have is how it puts the human equation on the line. Following the emotional strain of being Clark Kent, watching Bruce Wayne's nightmares haunt him, the Sandman's struggle to justify "necessary evil", Aunt Mae being the rock which grounds Peter Parker; I love that stuff.

I know I'll probably have a lot of gray hair by the time we see a Justice League movie, but has anyone considered Amanda Waller playing a role in the Justice League movie? She'd be terrific and I had an idea to cast Chandra Wilson (Dr. Bailey) from Grey's Anatomy???? She'd be terrific! WOW what a total cold-hearted bitch, you can't help but love and fear her.

Joker Jack not happy........

Part of MTV interview with Jack Nicholson pertaining to upcoming The Dark Knight.....

MTV: What do you think of another actor, Heath Ledger, playing the Joker in next summer's "The Dark Knight"?

Nicholson: Let me be the way I'm not in interviews. I'm furious. I'm furious. [He laughs.] They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.

MTV: It was never brought up?

Nicholson: No. It's like, in any area, you can't believe the reasons things do or don't happen. Not asking me how to do the sequel is that kind of thing. Maybe it's not a mistake. Maybe it was the right thing, but to be candid, I'm furious.

MTV: I'm surprised to hear you sounding competitive about a role like that.

Nicholson: Well, the Joker comes from my childhood. That's how I got involved with it in the first place. It's a part I always thought I should play.
MTV: Will you see the new film?

Nicholson: I'm not inclined to watch it because of what I said. But if it's a good movie, I'll catch up with it somewhere. I don't think they ever really captured Tim Burton's spirit [since he stopped being involved]. They kind of drove the franchise into the ground. Tim Burton's a genius. He had the right take on it. That's why I did the movie. I did the movie based on a single conversation with him. We both come from the cartoon world originally. We had similar ideas. Tim said [the Joker] should have a humorous dark side to him. [Burton is] one of the great moviemakers. I think the world of him. He's the most unassuming man. And he doesn't feel pressure. That's what I love about him. Once he's in there, he's smiling making the movie. That's it!

From some apparently insider/ fan site... Link was at SuperheroHype.com So who knows........ (not sure how MAJOR a spoiler it is...all depends o the execution)....

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WARNING! MAJOR PLOT SPOILER AHEAD! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Dark Knight begins with the Joker robbing a huge bank (we’ve seen photos of this everywhere). The bank is where the mob and all the gangs in Gotham keep all of their money. The Joker takes this money and holds it “ransom”. The Joker then says to the mob and the gangs of Gotham, “If you help me take down Batman, you’ll get your money back. If not, I’m going to burn it all.” This is how the Joker assembles his army to take down Batman.

Probably Old Topic, but is Hulkling a Cop-Out?

Okay, I realize there hasn't been an issue of Young Avengers in almost a year (and it's scheduled to be back, in a limited series, starting Jan of 08), but do you think Hulkling (just like the Skrull over in Runaways) is a cop out?

I find it really odd that two of the prominent gay couples in Marvel are partially made up by beings that are actually neither male nor female, just that they "choose" to be one rather than the other.

(1) It makes their sexuality seem somewhat fluid, which means that , yeah, we can state that Wiccan and Karolina are definitely gay, but their partners may not be.

(2) It leads to major problems in the future, as this 'Secret Invasion' is coming, and two of the three youth teams in the Marvel U are populated by "out" Skrulls. What's that going to do to these relationships?

Admittedly, I like Wiccan and Karolina more than I like their partners, but when I look at the relationships in a certain way, it seems like a half-assed appeasement by Marvel.

Just my thoughts....

ICP 16 is now available

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

The 16th edition of the ICP is now available at:

http://ogresview.mu.nu/archives/243135.php.

This edition represents an attempt to reach out to a conservative political community about HIV/AIDS. It is my hope that our messages might encourage those who normally do not come in contact with the issues of HIV/AIDS to think about how to help us fight the pandemic. We have poetry, video, personal accounts and news from around the world.

Next Edition

Please visit the ICP homepage to learn more about this project and how you can contribute at the following link:

http://internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com/

We are now accepting submissions for edition 17 to be hosted at Slimconomy at the link:

http://slimconomy.blogspot.com

Please consider contributing your original artwork, poetry, news, personal accounts, short stories, videos or music files for the next edition.

Please Share with Your Friends

As usual, I would like to ask you to post a permanent link to the ICP homepage (you can get a widget there as well) on your blogs or websites and to share the word of this edition with your readers and friends. The more people who know about the ICP, the more likely it will be that we will continue to receive excellent contributions. In fact, feel free to nominate your own HIV/AIDS related contributions from your favorite blogs or websites. The most powerful stories are those of personal nature, so I would encourage you to seek out or write personal accounts and to share them with the ICP. There are many more of you than of me, so join me in the search for quality blogs that share personal stories about HIV/AIDS from around the world. We have hardly begun to tap into the situation in Asia, so blogs from that region of the world are particularly welcome.

Contribute Your Work

I hope that you will join the growing community of contributors and hosts for this important international forum for genuine voices of AIDS. If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me at ron.hudson@verizon.net and I will make the process for you as painless as possible. Return hosts are welcome! We have hosts in line through December, 2007, but need to start recruiting new hosts for next year. I hope that you will consider signing up to host a specific edition of the ICP.

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please email me with the word REMOVE or SUBSCRIBE in your subject line to have your name removed from or added to, respectively, the ICP mailing list. If you did not receive notice of the ICP from me via direct email, then I do not have your email address in the mailing list. Please note that I can not remove an email address that does not exist on the mailing list!!!!!

Peace to you and yours.

They never beat up gays, they never made fun of peoples differences, they never advocated harming me. It IS a breeder world, and I am NOT one of 'Them', so it is ok that there are so few gay heros. But without their world of tolerance I would have had a harder time becoming a happy homo. Back when I was young there were no badly acted gay dramas like today, does aceptance mean that we can have just as bad TV ratings as the breeders have? And will Stan Lee have a gay hero on the second season of 'Who wants to be a super hero?'

ICP 15 is now available at Living Mindfully with HIV

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

The 15th edition of the ICP is now available at the following link:

http://hivhsnmindfulness.blogspot.com:80/2007/08/15th-edition-of-international-carnival.html

on the blog Living Mindfully with HIV. This edition includes a return of artwork from Colombian artist Farid de la Ossa, a video from Angelique Kidjo and Joss Stone for relief for Darfur, a special gift offer from me for your contribution to an AIDS Charity of your choice, HIV/AIDS news from around the world, more addiction recovery help, a very special introduction to "Big Love" or "Arohanui", and much more. Please take a few moments to read and leave comments, particularly for your host, James Wortz, who has done yet another great job despite a bout of bad health in the last few days.

Next Edition

Please visit the ICP homepage ( http://internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com ) to learn more about this project and how you can contribute. We are now accepting submissions for edition 16 to be hosted at Ogre's Politics and Views ( http://www.ogresview.mu.nu ). Please consider contributing your original artwork, poetry, news, personal accounts, short stories, videos or music files for the next edition. This next edition is very special. I have approached the host, Mr. Ogre, to participate as an outreach to a conservative political community that normally may not hear from people living with HIV/AIDS. Please consider this an opportunity to share your stories with a group of people who may not normally think of HIV/AIDS as often as we do and how you might make your case for teamwork with people who may not necessarily agree with you.

If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me and I will make the process for you as painless as possible. Return hosts are welcome!

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please send me an email (ron.hudson@verizon.net) with the word REMOVE or SUBSCRIBE in your subject line to have your name removed or added to the ICP mailing list.

Peace to you and yours.
Deconstruction of the superhero ......

Cool chunk from Wiki ....

Deconstruction of the superhero

In the 1970s, DC Comics paired Green Arrow with Green Lantern in a ground-breaking, socially conscious series. Writer Dennis O'Neil portrayed Green Arrow as an angry, street-smart populist and Green Lantern as good-natured but short-sighted authority figure. This is the first instance in which superheroes were classified into two distinct groups, the "classic" superhero and the more brazen anti-hero.

In the 1970s, DC returned Batman to his roots as a dubious vigilante and Marvel introduced several popular anti-heroes, including The Punisher, Wolverine, and writer/artist Frank Miller's dark version of the longtime hero Daredevil. Batman, The Punisher, and Daredevil were driven by the crime-related deaths of family members and continual exposure to slum life, while X-Men's Wolverine was tormented by barely controllable savage instincts. The trend was taken to a higher level in the 1986 miniseries Watchmen by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, which was published by DC but took place outside the "DC Universe" with new characters. The superheroes of Watchmen were emotionally unsatisfied, psychologically withdrawn, sexually confused, and even sociopathic.

Another story, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1985-1986) continued Batman’s renovation/reinterpretation. This miniseries, written and illustrated by Frank Miller, featured a Batman from an alternate/non-continuity future returning from retirement. The series portrayed the hero as an obsessed vigilante, necessarily at odds with official social authority figures, illustrated both by the relationship between Batman and retiring police commissioner James Gordon, and by the symbolic slugfest between the Dark Knight and Superman, now an agent/secret weapon of the U.S government. Both Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were acclaimed for their artistic ambitiousness and psychological depth, and became watershed series.

Miller continued his seminal treatment of the Batman character with 1987's Batman: Year One (Batman issues #404-407) and 2001's The Dark Knight Strikes Again (also known as DK2). DK2, the long-awaited follow-up to Dark Knight Returns, contrasts the traditional superhero-crimefighter character with the more politically conscious characters that evolved during the 1990s (perhaps epitomized by The Authority and Planetary, both written by British author Warren Ellis). In DK2, Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor is the power behind the throne, controlling a tyrannical American government, as well as Superman himself. Superman's submission to Luthor's twisted power structure, in the name of saving lives is contrasted with Batman's determined attack against the corrupted institutions of government; the message is that crime can occur at all levels of society, and the heroes are responsible for fighting both symptoms and causes of societal dysfunction and corruption.

Struggles of the 1990s

By the early 1990s, anti-heroes had become the rule rather than the exception, as The Punisher, Wolverine and the grimmer Batman became popular and marketable characters. Anti-heroes such as the X-Men’s Gambit and Bishop, X-Force's Cable and the Spider-Man adversary Venom became some of the most popular new characters of the early 1990s. This was a financial boom time for the industry when a new character could become well-known quickly and, according to many fans, stylistic flair eclipsed character development.

In 1992, Marvel illustrators Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld — all of whom helped popularize anti-heroes in the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises — left Marvel to form Image Comics. Image changed the comic book industry as a haven for creator-owned characters and the first significant challenger to Marvel and DC in thirty years. Image superhero teams, such as Lee’s WildC.A.Ts and Gen¹³, and Liefeld’s Youngblood, were instant hits but were criticized[citation needed] as over-muscled, over-sexualized, excessively violent, and lacking in unique personality. McFarlane's occult hero Spawn fared somewhat better in critical respect[citation needed] and long-term sales.

In this decade, Marvel and DC made drastic temporary changes to iconic characters. DC's "Death of Superman" story arc across numerous Superman titles found the hero killed and resurrected, while Batman was physically crippled in the "KnightFall" storyline. At Marvel, a clone of Spider-Man vied with the original for over a year of stories across several series. All eventually returned to the status quo.

Throughout the 1990s, several creators deviated from the trends of violent anti-heroes and sensational, large-scale storylines. Painter Alex Ross, writer Kurt Busiek and Alan Moore himself tried to "reconstruct" the superhero form. Acclaimed titles such as Busiek's, Ross' and Brent Anderson's Astro City and Moore's Tom Strong combined artistic sophistication and idealism into a super heroic version of retro-futurism. Ross also painted two widely acclaimed mini-series, Marvels (written by Busiek) for Marvel Comics and Kingdom Come for DC, which examined the classic superhero in a more literary context, as well as satirizing antiheroes. Magog, Superman’s rival in Kingdom Come was partially modeled after Cable.
